Bolton 17 - 40 Wigan

Scott's young charges take St. Andrew's Day spoils

Head coach, Martin Scott, celebrated St. Andrew’s day in style, as he took his table topping Wigan side to Bolton in the latest round of the ADM league.

A youthful Wigan side made a slightly nervy start and indiscipline gave Bolton an early shot at goal and a 3-0 lead.

Danny Cassidy settled the nerves somewhat, with a break down the left wing. Cassidy sold his man the dummy, stepped inside and then flipped the ball out to Nathan Butler who sidestepped the waiting defender and set off down the wing for the first try of the game.
Cassidy added the conversion to give Wigan a 3-7 lead.

Bolton worked their way back into the game and a series of penalties gave the home side great field position. An attacking lineout was taken down and settled into a maul before they pushed the ball over for the score. With the conversion added, Bolton took a 10-7 lead.

Wigan once again started to look nervy and looked to the older heads to calm the play down. Having worked close to the Bolton line, Danny Cassidy once again showed great footwork to step through the defensive line for the score. Cassidy converted his own try and the sides went into half time with the scores at 10-14 in the favour of the Douglas Valley men.
Scott’s half time talk was about patience and settling into the game. No sooner had the game restarted, Mason Fillingham intercepted a loose Bolton pass and immediately set Nathan Butler on his way to finish from 80 yards. Cassidy converted.
Just moments later, Cassidy collected the ball in his own half and chipped the onrushing defenders. The Bolton backline misfielded the ball and Cassidy was on hand to collect it and take the ball all the way for the score. Zack Barker added the conversion for a 10-28 lead.
Wigan were in dominant mood now and any early nerves had been settled. Penalties gave Wigan the opportunity to play the game deep in Bolton territory and they made good use of the advantage. Many phases of play saw Wigan go close until Tom Whelan burst through three men to stretch over for the score. Barker added the conversion.
Wigan’s final score of the game came in similar fashion, with Wigan camped on the Bolton line. Dogged defensive work saw Wigan come up short close to the sticks, so Zack Barker threw a long flat pass out to Olly Turvey on the wing who was able to walk over for the score.
Further Wigan indiscipline saw two men sent to the sin bin and Wigan down to 13 men. Bolton took advantage of the numerical difference and broke down the right wing for a consolation score and conversion. This took the game to 17-40 in favour of the Wigan side and the scores remained the same until the final whistle.
Wigan welcome Sefton to Douglas Valley this Saturday 7th December with kick off scheduled for 2.15pm.
