Wigan travelled to a sunny Littleborough in the opening round of the Lancashire plate, being the first competitive rugby of the season.
Littleborough looked well drilled and made the early ground before forcing the ball over for a converted try just 5 minutes into the game.
Wigan fought back with a break through the middle which was recycled and played through the hands before Zak Barker put Matt Cuthbert over in the corner for a diving effort to take the scores to 7-5 after 12 minutes of play.
The to and fro continued as Littleborough took control of the ball. A series of penalties saw the Boro men camped in the Wigan 22 before the ball was forced over for the score. The half continued to ebb and flow but no further scores were added for a 12-5 half time scoreline.
Littleborough made the better of the restart and immediately opened the gap on the Douglas Valley men. A slick move down the left hand side saw them go over in the corner for a converted try to take the score to 19-5.
Wigan settled in to the half and it was Zak Barker who was controlling the play. Barker took the ball in close before being hauled down. With the ball recycled, Ollie Morgan popped the ball up for Jack Proffitt to force the ball over in the corner. Barker added the conversion to bring the sides within one score at 19-12.
Littleborough hit straight back and fought their way upfield. Great defence from the Wigan side couldn’t keep the home side out and they went over in the corner.
Littleborough were in the ascendancy now and it wasn’t long before they added another score. With the legs tiring, the ball was kept tight and was trundled over from an attacking lineout. The conversion took the score to 33-12 with just minutes remaining.
Wigan were undaunted and looked to pull off an unlikely comeback. Will Boardman took a flat pass off Adam Pierce and broke through the line. He set the full back before stepping inside him and going over for the score. Barker added the conversion to take the score to 33-19. The comeback was soon stifled though as no further scores could be added.
Wigan can take heart that a youthful side really put pressure on a well drilled and experienced Littleborough side, on their own patch. The control and discipline on display will give the coaching staff confidence as they head into their league opener at home to Southport this Saturday, 7th September with kick off scheduled for 3pm.
