Wigan welcomed back second row Adam Pierce, young starlet Zack Barker, and brought in utility player Tom Whelan to the bench as they looked to complete the double over a strong Warrington side.
Alas, all good things have to come to an end and so Wigan’s long winning run was ended by a strong, committed Warrington side, who were worthy winners by 38-22.
Early pressure saw Wire kick 2 penalties for a 6-0 lead only to pegged back by a long-distance interception by the impressive Mason Fillingham, finished by speedy winger, Butler. Danny Cassidy added the extras, followed by a penalty to take the scores 6-10 in favour of Wigan. Warrington then scored a try and anther penalty to retake the lead 14-10 at the break.
The second half belonged almost exclusively to the home side who raced into a 38-10 lead with 3 converted tries and a fourth penalty. The contest was more or less settled by this stage and although a late Wigan rally saw them score 2 tries through skipper Harry Barker and Danny Cassidy, they could not quite manage to register a bonus point. A well-deserved win for Warrington makes the top of the table very interesting with 6 games to go.
Oldham away next week! Take your big coat.
Thanks go out to Andrew "Cyril" Knowles, who kindly stepped in over the last two weeks and wrote the reports, whilst I was away.
Cheers
