Wigan living the life of Riley as they go top of the league

Wigan welcomed Warrington to Douglas Valley after a week of torrential rain put pay to many fixtures. With the grounds under water on Wednesday, it is testament to the work done on the pitch that the game was able to go ahead at all.

Warrington took advantage of some early possession and moved into the Wigan half. A penalty was awarded and Warrington took the 3 points on offer for an early lead.

Wigan hit back with a penalty of their own, slotted home by Danny Cassidy, before Cassidy added another after 25 minutes of play.

The game was evenly poised at 6-3 when Wigan took advantage of the space out wide on the left wing. George Lowe and Nathan Butler combined well to put Butler over the line and Cassidy added the conversion for a 13-3 lead.
Warrington were under the cosh now as Wigan piled on the pressure but it was the away side who hit back against the run of play as a huge gap opened up in the middle of the Wigan defence for Warrington to stroll over the line under the sticks for a 13-10 scoreline.
Cassidy added another penalty before the break to give Wigan a half time lead of 16-10.

Not long after the restart, debutant, Riley Dervan made a break from outside centre that left defenders in his wake. He cut inside his man on the 22 before breaking the tackle of the next man and crashing over for the score. Cassidy added the conversion and Wigan looked strong at 23-10.

Indiscipline saw Wigan down to 14 men and despite valiant defending, Warrington took advantage of the extra space to score in the corner and give them hope of a comeback.

With Wigan back up to full strength, they took control of the game and looked to wind down the clock. Multiple phases saw Wigan trundle down the park before the ball was spun out wide to Jack Proffitt who finished off a great team try for a final score of 28-17.
Wigan go into the autumn break top of the division having made a great start, which not many could have predicted, even after the promotion season last year.
