Wigan welcomed Thorton Cleveleys to Douglas valley this weekend as they renewed their rivalry from last season, which saw the Wigan side finish a close second to T-C in the league. With both sides promoted they have seen their fortunes differ as Wigan top the table and Thornton Cleveleys languish at the wrong end of the table, having lost a number of key personnel in the off-season.
Christmas festivities began in earnest as Wigan fielded the kick off and attacked from the off. Danny Cassidy made a break down the left flank before putting Nathan Butler through on the wing. Butler took the ball on and set the fullback before flicking the ball inside to Cassidy. Cassidy was in danger of being caught before he passed inside to Zack Barker who jogged over for the try under the sticks. Cassidy converted.
10 minutes in and Wigan were on the front foot again. Riley Dervan made good ground through the middle before the ball was recycled and made its way to Adam Pierce. Pierce found Butler out wide who then grubber kicked the ball past the defensive line before chasing it down for the score.
Thorton added a score of their own via a penalty kick to make the scores 12-3 on 17 minutes.
Wigan added another score, this time Chris Carr was the catalyst, with a deft grubber kick angled into the corner. Jack Proffitt was quickest to the ball and dived over for the score. Cassidy converted from the touchline.
Thorton added another penalty and the score was 19-6.
Half an hour into the game and Wigan looked comfortably in control. Chris Carr made a break on halfway and passed the ball out to Cassidy. Cassidy fixed the defensive line in place before finding Carr inside to finish from 30 yards. Cassidy added the conversion.
Thornton added another penalty to take the scores to 26-9 at half time.
Wigan rang the changes at the half and the game settled into a slightly scrappy affair. It was quarter of an hour before the deadlock could be broken. Cassidy dummied his marker and stepped inside another defender before laying the ball up for Mason Fillingham to score his first try for the club. Cassidy added the conversion.
Cassidy was finding gaps in the defensive line with every possession now. A quick 1-2 with Nathan Butler saw the Wigan fullback go over for a score of his own and he converted his own try.
The final score of the game came with 5 minutes left. Thornton were looking for a consolation score when Butler intercepted in his own 22 and ran the ball back the full length of the field for the score. Cassidy added the conversion and the game finished 47-9.
Wigan finish 2024 top of the league and look forward to continuing their campaign in the New Year.
