Cassidy in control as Wigan conquer Oldham

Wigan welcomed Oldham to Douglas Valley in bright October sunshine as they looked to continue their good run of form in ADM Counties league 2.
Adam Pierce opened the scoring with a barnstorming run that was set up after some good work by the outside backs after just 5 minutes.
Wigan looked in fine form on a dry track and Danny Cassidy made the first of a series of breaks as the fullback looked to take control of the game. Cassidy took the ball on in his own half making a mazy run that turned the Oldham defence inside out. Cassidy fixed the full back before setting up Harry Barker for the finish. Zak Barker added the conversion for a 12-0 lead after 12 minutes of play.

Nathan Butler was the next to turn the defence, collecting a clearance kick in midfield he made a break down the right wing before the ball worked it’s way to Zak Barker, who carried over. Barker added the conversion.

Oldham were rocked and there were spaces across the backline. Ollie Morgan spotted a gap at the side of the ruck and made a 20 yard break to score another for the home side. Barker added the conversion and Wigan were in control with a 26-0 scoreline after 25 minutes.

Cassidy took the ball on again on halfway and made what was becoming a trademark run. Again he fixed the full back and again Zak Barker was on hand to collect the offload. Barker converted his own try for a 33-0 lead.

Oldham looked defeated but they still had some fight in them. Indiscipline in the Wigan ranks gave Oldham good position from a series of penalties and managed to force the ball over for a score to go in at half time 33-5 behind.

Wigan, having suffered a number of injuries, now found themselves with players out of position and this levelled the flow of the game. It was 18 minutes into the second half when Oldham, who had elected for uncontested scrums, took the ball off the back of the static pack and took it over from 5 yards. With the conversion kicked it was 33-12.

Wigan reorganised and took the game away from the opposition. Oldham, deep in wigan territory kicked into the corner and Nathan Butler collected, before rounding the chasing defender and taking the ball the full length of the field. Danny Cassidy added the conversion.
Cassidy was in his pomp now with a chip over the winger which he collected himself. As he approached the covering fullback he chipped again and collected his own kick again to go over under the sticks. Cassidy converted his own try.

Ollie Morgan piled on the pressure with a break down the left wing before popping the ball up to Jack Proffitt who finished from 40 yards.
In the dying moments of the game, Cassidy again showed his class with a double dummy that sent 4 men the wrong way. Cassidy broke down the wing and Oldham gave up the chase as he jogged down the touchline. Harry Barker added the conversion to make the scores 59-12 at the final whistle.
Wigan travel to Leigh next weekend with kick off scheduled for 2pm.
